1. Know the difference between full grain leather and top grain leather, first. Full grain is about as natural as it comes, as it isn't layered with other hides. It's the softest (because it's one single piece), strongest, and most expensive kind of leather to own but caring for this article of leather is much more forgiving than the lesser grade of leather known as top grain. Top grain is essentially that, a slice of the original hide but reinforced with other pieces of hide to help thicken up its appearance and durability. Both kind of hides are much more durable than your average sofa or couch cushions but there is some care you need to apply to help your items last years and years.

2. Leather conditioner. Leather furniture needs conditioning every now and then to keep it from cracking, or fading, to keep it looking as natural as possible. Conditioners help put the natural oils back into the furniture and keep it looking as fresh as the day you brought it home. There are products out there that, for mere pennies per application, can revitalize and rejuvenate your leather furniture much like the act of putting on moisturizer after a good shower. Treat it as you would your own skin and you will turn your purchase into an investment in no time at all.
